BONAIRE THANKSGIVING 2009Capt. Don's Habitat Resort, Bonaire
As usual, Bonaire never disappoints! With timely flights and good weather, an early Sunday morning arrival was accomplished and everyone was able to check into their rooms at Capt. Don's Habitat for a short rest after the red-eye flight. After breakfast and the required Bonaire dive briefing, scuba dive gear was unpacked and diving commenced. No one wastes any time getting in the water in Bonaire…there’s too little time on vacation and too many things to see underwater!
Dive sites during the week included the Habitat fantastic House Reef, Andreas II, the Hilma Hooker wreck, Rappel, Munk’s Haven, Petrie’s Pillar, Something Special which ALWAYS is, and others along the West Coast of Bonaire as well as many over at Klein Bonaire. Sightings included eagle rays, turtles, schools of jacks, a few seahorses and even a very camouflaged frogfish as well as the usual reef residents in good numbers. I even found a very rare, very skittish dwarf blenny in between a bunch of tube sponges at Something Special! Eels were back out in good numbers, reinforcing the theory that whatever disease was killing them late last year has passed on. Water temperature ranged between 82-84 which everyone enjoyed and visibility was mostly in excess of 100 feet. All in all, great Bonaire diving!
All of us opted to NOT have the Thanksgiving buffet at Capt. Don's Habitat, and instead we went to Casablanca and had various fish dishes in honor of our Island holiday! Mahi mahi with lobster and shrimp sauce seemed an appropriate Island Thanksgiving meal to us! Other fantastic dinners were consumed at Cappricio’s, Cactus Blue, the Lions Den, Rum Runners and we ended our week having a final dinner at It Rains Fishes. Food on Bonaire is reasonably priced and always delicious – it’s truly amazing the creative chefs that choose to make Bonaire their home.
All in all, we enjoyed Moogie’s music two nights during the week at Capt. Don’s; the Manager’s Cocktail Party and the Week in Review party. The bar is always hopping at Habitat and Jason & Kelvin make super delicious drinks.
Many thanks go to Max, Luttie, Geo & Leo for great dives and lots of fun on the boats as well. Max, I still can’t believe you can blow that many giant rings on one breath of air and then swim upwards through them! We always look forward to diving with the gang at Capt. Don's Habitat and can’t wait to get back again next year. Come join us and we’ll share the fun!
